Melee Diamonds: Small Stones Need Their Own Material Description

Start with the smaller stones

Melee is a trade term for small diamonds, often used as accents around a larger stone or along a band. GIA defines melee diamonds as weighing less than one fifth of a carat each. In pavé diamond rings, their size does not remove the need to know what they are. A detailed description should identify the smaller stones as well as the centre.

Ask about growth origin separately

A statement about a centre diamond does not automatically describe the surrounding diamonds. Ask whether the accents are natural or laboratory-grown and whether that applies to every stone in the selected option. Neither a continuous line of sparkle nor the use of the word melee establishes origin. Small stones require appropriate identification methods just as larger stones do.

Read counts and weights together

Keep the number of accents, their stated total weight and the centre weight in separate entries on your shortlist. A combined diamond total can describe several different arrangements. You might prefer a delicate border or a more substantial line, but the total alone cannot show how large the individual accents are or how they are distributed.

Understand the documentation

Ask which stones an accompanying report covers and how the remaining diamonds are described. Do not assume every accent has its own individual report, or that a centre report covers the full ring. In CIELA's ring collection, compare the actual centre and accent information for the chosen design. Clear disclosure lets you appreciate the whole arrangement without merging several material questions.
